The Spicy Chai Latte Hidden In An Eclectic Neighbourhood Cafe

Le Marché St. George is a true Vancouver hidden gem. I’m not sure I’ve ever been in a café quite like this one – one with such unique décor and a fun take on traditional coffee beverages, including their wondrous spicy chai latte.

The neighbourhood café and general store serves up two different types of chai, one sweet and one spicy. Made with your choice of dairy, almond, or soy milk, their spicy chai latte has a distinctive bitter taste. It’s a traditional and far more adult take on the beverage, seemingly strong with black peppercorn and cardamom in both palate and aroma. A tangy edge quickly contrasts the drink’s initially smooth and sweet flavour, which may be a shock if you’re not used to the intense flavour. Consequently, this is not your Starbucks chai. Instead, it feels authentically and delicately handcrafted. As a result, the strong Indian spice lingers in your mouth long after you consume it. It’s an ideal drink to warm even the most disenfranchised souls. And as you drink this spicy latte, it’ll also massage and caress your throat like a fine whiskey.

The chai is perfectly blended to ensure the spices are fluid throughout the drink and not primarily at the bottom. This probably adds to the aroma, as the chai isn’t fighting the other elements of the drink for proper attention. There’s no crema decorating this fine drink. Therefore, the pale beverage hides within its eggshell white bowl and saucer.

Being in Le Marché St. George is like being in an old French cartoon. Here, you’ll find rickety wood floors, the precise placement of eclectic goods and art, poignant French music, and a cast of characters that venture into the space. It’s very much meant to feel like a French neighbourhood convenience store but it’s hard to call it that with all of its Western and Italian products. What is it? Well, it’s a fantastic, welcoming, community-oriented destination. So, grab your car or take a stroll down St. George Street to venture into this cozy neighbourhood gem.
