The Perfect Pancake to Satisfy Your Childhood Cereal Craving

Ever since I was young, I’ve always loved cereal. I remember mixing two or three types of cereal together to make the perfect morning concoction. To this day, I eat cereal for a snack, lunch, or even dinner on occasion. One of my favourite cereals is Frosted Flakes, and when I discovered that Jethro’s Fine Grub makes pancakes with Frosted Flakes in the batter, I instantly knew I would love them. They sounded like a breakfast dream come true.

Jethro’s has two three locations in Vancouver, one on Fraser, one on Dunbar and one on Bute (@Robson). I went to the Fraser Street location. The restaurant itself was quite small, but made up for its size with character. Cheeky sayings lined the walls, along with a chalk message board. During my visit, the tables remained filled, and the restaurant was bustling with activity. There was a fun community atmosphere about the place, and I found myself talking to the diners around me. The staff were also very friendly and helpful, informing me of the most popular dishes.

Jethro’s serves a wide selection of delicious-sounding dishes, including the Chocolate Chip Banana Bread French Toast and the Crab Cake Benedict. But I had my heart set on the Grrrreat Pancakes, and promptly ordered it, along with a glass of water. As I was waiting for my breakfast, I saw other tables receive their meals, and was shocked by the size of the portions. When my Grrrreat Cakes arrived, I literally gasped out loud.

Two dinner-plate-sized pancakes sat in front of me, topped with a generous dollop of whipped butter. The pancakes were about an inch thick and bigger than my face. It was slightly intimidating. But, being a breakfast aficionado, I quickly dug in.

The pancake itself was sweet and delicious on its own. Frosted Flakes throughout added an interesting crunchy texture not usual for a pancake. Fresh strawberries added a tartness that perfectly complemented the sweetness of the grrrreat cakes. For the average palate, the pancake would have been sufficiently sweet on its own, without syrup. However, I have a major sweet tooth, especially when it comes to breakfast foods (and to be honest, it felt wrong to eat pancakes without syrup).

So naturally, I added syrup, which amplified the sugary sweetness of the dish. The pancakes were so big and filling that I could only finish a quarter of the serving. Luckily, my server brought me a small pizza box (I’m not exaggerating!) to pack up the rest to take home. I had breakfast for the next three days! Four breakfasts for $13 – definitely great value for money!

Jethro’s Fine Grub gave me an exemplary breakfast experience, all the way from the service, food quality, and price point. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and visit, and would recommend the restaurant to anyone looking for a more interesting and unique breakfast!
